bradcar77 and Loosi tackle the best films of 2009. Thanks for your guys' patience and in sending these in the first place. Much appreciated

--

What: The Culturish Awards celebrating the year in film, 2009

Who: US

Where: Here

When: Deadline is April 23th, 2010 with awards being announced on the 27th thru to the 30th.

Why: Because we're awesome.

How:....

TIER ONE CATEGORIES: Picture, Director, Leading Actor, Leading Actress, Supporting Actress, Supporting Actor, Screenplay, Ensemble and Scene.

--- I'm adding ensemble and keeping scene here. Despite the tallying difficulties, scene seemed popular enough to keep

For every category you're voting in, do one of the following.

1. Send a ranked list of ten (10) works that you feel exemplify the best of the category. If you do this, points will be accorded as follows: first place is 15 points, second place is 14, etc. A total of 100 points will be given to each category. OR

2. Take the 100 points given to each category, and divide it up on your own, with the rule that no slot can get less than five points or more than 30. This is designed to let you decide how strong your passion is. OR

3. In any category that you wish to participate in but do not want to send in ten contenders, you may send in an unranked ballot. Each slot will be worth ten points. You may send in up to ten contenders this way.

TIER TWO CATEGORIES: Film Editing, Cinematography, Art Direction, Costume Design, Original Song, Original Score, Make-Up, Visual Effects, Sound (Mixing and Editing – one category)

For every category you're voting in, do the following.

1. Submit a list of up to five contenders, with your two favourite entrants clearly marked. Your personal winner will score three points, the runner-up will score two and the remaining entrants will score one.

When ballots are completed, please EMAIL them to culturegeek.the8th@gmail.com with the heading CULTURISH AWARDS. If your culturish handle is not a part of your email name, please include that somewhere in the body of the email. If you'd prefer to pm them directly to me, you may do that as well. (I prefer that, actually).

The Results will be posted on our mainpage, hopefully with images and factoids, depending on how that goes.

-- I'll be posting a list of ineligible/iffy films soon.

Stanley Tucci is really upset that this thread has fallen so far.

I mean, Meryl was looking all over for it!

Oh, and Jason Reitman heard all of those things CG's been saying about his script...

And, please say this guy will be there for our awards.

Seriously. Who the fuck is that guy and what's up with his jaw?

Is anyone else having trouble with this? I know I haven't seen a lot from 2009, but I'm finding it hard to come up with a list of films I would consider worthy of a Best Picture nomination. There seems to be nothing for me this year - just a lot of movies that I more or less admired.

I have quite a few more films to see, so I'm hoping my list improves. I do see a lot more star vehicles scoring better, which is something I tend not to do (and does seem to be an indicator of a weaker field).

Ditto. It's the performances, more than anything, that I'll remember from 2009.

I tihnk I should have seen everything I'm interested in by the deadline with only a handful of exceptions. While I agree about the performances, I think I saw a lot of films that provided rather striking visuals this year, so the cinematography and art direction long lists will be tough to whittle down for me as well.

So question... are we including A Prophet in this? I would like to, but I know some people have mentioned they are counting that as 2010.

I'm counting it as 2010 for my personal records, since its US theatrical run began this year, but I could go either way on the group awards.

instead of having rules, and since this is an international forum, can't we let votes decide?
if enough people count it as '09, it might get in.
if not, it won't.
collective decision making and all that.

I had a similar question about Gomorrah. I don't really remember if people voted for it for last year's awards.

I'm fine not having any eligibility rules (within reason), as long as people who voted for a film last year don't vote for it this year (Stag, Gomorrah did get votes last year). This would also affect Silent Light which had a second commercial run in 2009, and Hunger, which did the one-week thing as well.

I'm considering Silent Light a 2009 release. Did it get a 2008 qualifying run? I was under the impression it just played at MoMA or somewhere.

Silent Light placed 14th in our awards last year. I got to see it at an advanced screening but I do think it got an initial half-hearted release in 2008 before the second half-assed release in 2009.

Silent Light bounced around the film festival circuit throughout 2008, but finally got picked up by Tartan and it had it's NYC premiere on 1/7/2009.

it had an odd pattern, with the US release near the end of its international run.
it actually played cannes in may '07 and toronto in september '07, got a very limited canadian (toronto only?) release in 2008 and had been released on dvd in canada by september 2008.

eta: just a comment on the odd pattern, not a statement on whether it should be '08 or '09.

Yeah, it was sort of screwy on the release dates. I just figured I'd relay my method of making the determination. Don't want to dictate what method others use for making the determination, but it's the most concrete thing I can find.

I usually find voting for my favourite movie scene of the year kind of overwhelming, but this year, my favourite is from Coraline, and it's when she goes into the Other World and sees those actress sisters quoting lines from plays by William Shakespeare, while they are performing that acrobatic routine for an audience of Scottish terriers.

Did this stand out to anyone else? Because I thought it was very, very impressive from both a technical and storytelling point-of-view.

I like the list of scenes CG has going already, but here's a few others I wanted to call attention to.

Antichrist
The opening sequence

Broken Embraces
The plotting of a vampire movie

The Fantastic Mr. Fox
The final chase (as the Boggis, Bunce and Bean song plays)

Mother
The end

Ponyo
Ponyo running on the waves

Bump.

Ballots are slowly coming in, but at this rate we wouldn't have a worthy awards line-up Do people want an extension? We could go until April 30th or even a little later.

I've just been a slacker. Running out to get some drinks for a friend's birthday, but I'll work on this a bit when I get home.

Sorry, just keep forgetting!
