| I was listening to the Oscar Talk podcast and apparently the Oscars committed to keeping the top ten around for three years. It's probably not a bad idea to at least keep it around this year because this was a fluke year with "Avatar" and the results may not be as populist this time around. Now that this is over and done with, the big questions are who follows up their nomination with "Catwoman 2: Purina Boogaloo" and who doesn't get invited to join the Academy. |

How about the favorite "who will be back" game?
Bridges - yes
Clooney - yes, more than once
Firth - maybe
Freeman - yes
Renner - no
Bullock - nope
Mirren - yep
Mulligan - if she takes the right path, she may come back more than once.
Sidibe - no
Streep - of course
Cruz - yes
Farmiga - yes
Gyllenhaal - it seems easy to say yes, but I say no. I never saw the "awesomeness" in here, and I thought she had Morton's spot this time.
Kendrick - no
Mo'Nique - no
Damon - yes, more than once
Harrelson - doubtful.
Plummer - no
Tucci - don't see it.
Waltz - no |

Bridges - I'm gonna say No.
Clooney - yes, will win lead one day.
Firth - yes
Freeman - I suspect this is it
Renner - yes, next year for the town. Supporting.
Bullock - ...
Mirren - Probably
Mulligan - YES, a win will happen
Sidibe - no
Streep - She has a spot reserved every year.
Cruz - Yeah, one or two more.
Farmiga - Will win one
Gyllenhaal - yes, one or two more.
Kendrick - no
Mo'Nique - no, I suspect she falls hard after this
Damon - yes, he will win lead
Harrelson - I can see him winning supporting later.
Plummer - Sadly no
Tucci - Probably one or two more nods at most
Waltz - I actually can see it, if he makes REALLY good choices. _________________

I don't know what they were trying to prove by going back to "And the winner is" over "And the Oscar goes to".
Regarding intros, even if you were going to have pals come on stage, they were such shit stories from randoms. Colin Farrell was amazing though in his earnesty. But stupid way to trash what was amaaazing last year.
I also hated how the lead acting nominees got that weird preferential treatment at the beginning. No suppports, no directors, nothing. Just clear 'ratings' bait for no reason. And awkard ones to boot.
I feel bad saying this, but this Gabby Sidibe thing made me realise - if you're actually overweight, they won't pick on you. If you're healthy and have something on you, that's when they'll pick on you.
Also awkward how they'd have people go out then stand there as if the producers were trying to evoke a standing ovation (re: Hughes cast...you know, give Culkin and Cryer a standing O?).
Stupid idiot camera work - you seat James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow so they're in the same shot..then when she effing WINS, when you'd want to see whether they have a moment or something, you cut away to a random extended shot from the top of the auditorium to see the backs of people. Blah. |

I thought this was true as well. But leave it to the always classy Howard Stern and Robin Quivers to destroy that theory...

Other than Bigelow, what records were broken / history was made at this year's Oscars?
I know that up until last year, never before had someone won an Oscar for playing a Nazi; now it's happened twice in a row.
Before 2001, there were six acting wins for black performers. In the last nine years alone, that number has now - with Mo'Nique's win - MORE than doubled.
The Hurt Locker is the first movie about the war in Iraq to win Best Picture. _________________

| Just to add on to your last note, The Hurt Locker is also the first war film to win that depicts a war that was still ongoing at the time of the ceremony. |

I believe Roger Ross Williams is the first black filmmaker to win for any kind of short film.
El secreto de sus ojos is the second film from South America to win Foreign Language film, the other being 1985's The Official Story, also from Argentina.
And, if we want to get real silly, Mo'Nique joins Edmund O'Brien and Tatum O'Neal as the only Oscar winners with apostrophes in their name. _________________ LostWatermelon.blogspot.com |

Mrs. Miniver, no? |
I haven't seen it, but I always thought of it as a film that takes place during wartime, but not necessarily a "war" film (as in primarily focused on the troops). But I could be wrong. Anyway, blame EW for that one if I am wrong |

I don't really know how Mrs. Miniver would be classified. It takes place during war time, it is about the effects and horrors of war, there are characters who go off to fight in the war, most of the characters are in the centre of London during the blitz, and Mrs. Miniver herself has a confrontation with an escaped German soldier on the lam, but on the other hand, I can see why people wouldn't necessarily label it a war film, since it doesn't take place on the battlefront. _________________
